State of emergency lifted for Wellington’s Southern and Eastern Wards

Jun 9, 2026, 7:03 PM

Mayor Andrew Little has lifted the local state of emergency in the Paekawakawa/Southern and Motukairangi/Eastern wards.

Background

On Monday 8 June, MetService issued a heavy swell warning for the south coast between Ōwhiro Bay and Breaker Bay.

The state of emergency in the southern and eastern suburbs has now been lifted. The latest forecast information shows that there is now an expected drop in wave frequency which means a lower risk of damage to property and life.

Roads around the south coast are now open. Please take care when travelling through the area and obey all road signage. There may be debris on the road, and surfaces may be slick.

Anybody with ongoing welfare needs should call the Council contact centre on 04 499 4444.
