The trustees have recently undertaken a review of the deed of trust ( Trust Deed). There were a range of drivers behind the review. As a result of the review and due to the number of required amendments, a restated deed is being put forward (the Proposed Restated Deed of Trust) for the membership to vote on.
Te Ātiawa ki te Upoko o te Ika a Māui Pōtiki Trust (the Trust) is the Mandated Iwi Organisation (MIO) for Te Ātiawa ki te Upoko o te Ika a Māui, pursuant to the Māori Fisheries Act 2004 (MFA). The Trust is also a registered charity with Charities Services.
Even though the Proposed Restated Deed is a replacement deed, it incorporates many features from the existing Trust Deed.
To ensure the updated (restated) Deed of Trust is formally recognised and adopted, the Trust is required to call a Special General Meeting (SGM) of Members.
At this meeting, Members will be asked to consider and vote on a formal motion to approve the restated Deed of Trust. Approval by Members is a necessary step in confirming the validity and adoption of the revised governing document.
To support Members in understanding the legislative changes and amendments required to ensure the Trust remains compliant, an information guide has been prepared. A copy of the Consultation Draft of the restated Deed of Trust has also been made available for review.
These documents are intended to provide clarity on the proposed updates and to assist Members in making an informed decision ahead of the Special General Meeting which will be held on Saturday 20 June 2026. Details of the meeting is shown, and access to online and in person voting will be provided to Members in advance.
The version of the Restated Deed is a 'flipbook' that has search capabilities for ease of review.
