$10k Tonganui Oceans Scholarship: Applications close 28 August 2025

Tapuwae Roa is pleased to confirm that applications for the Tonganui Scholarship are now open.

The Tonganui Scholarship is a $10,000 grant delivered as part of the Tukuoha funding programme and advances tikanga Māori, mātauranga tuku iho and Te Ao Māori within the oceans sector.      Tonganui Scholarship – Tapuwae Roa

Examples of previously funded projects:

• Kelp restoration projects grounded in iwi-led research
• Moana protection wānanga
• Community-based kaupapa celebrating the intersection of mātauranga tuku iho and modern science
• Film and storytelling projects highlighting Māori relationships with the ocean

Successful Tonganui Scholarship applicants must:

1. Be at least 22 years old at the time of application
2. Whakapapa Māori
3. Have four years or equivalent experience in the oceans sector, including but not limited to:

1. 1. Policy and regulations
   2. Science and research
   3. Commercial or operational (including start-ups, Mandated Iwi Organisations or fisheries and aquaculture companies)
   4. Community-based oceans initiatives
   5. Conservation, biosecurity and resource management
   6. Propose a programme that meets the requirements of the Tonganui Scholarship
